Other Music Videos

A2 Media music videos for Merry Happy by other students:
We looked at these videos made by other A2 Media students to get ideas for our own and see what they have done. From looking at these videos, we realised what would work and what doesn't look good or professional.

In this video we liked the way they used different angles to film the shots.(High Angle, Straight, Over The Shoulder). We chose to copy the idea of stop motion as the cheese on toast is eaten and the paper is unravelled, as we realised this was a key feature in Kate Nash videos. We didn't like the use of a negative on some of the shots in the video as it didn't reflect Kate Nash's style. Also, they didn't think their locations through properly as in parts of the video they have set it in their college which wouldn't happen in a Kate Nash video.

In this video we liked how it started off with her playing the piano and the camera only showing her hands. As this idea was used in Kate Nash's Mouthwash video. We decided not to use this as we didn't want to copy the video exactly as her other ones have been made. The way they made the character of Kate have the dress style of her and made her look like Kate Nash is really good as makes it a more believable music video. We didn't like how the lip sync was off in parts of the video as it looks unprofessional.  Also sometimes the video is too literally following the lyrics which makes it hard to watch and boring.

A2 Music Videos

Other songs by Kate Nash remade by students:
We also looked at these video's made by other A2 Media students for Kate Nash songs as we wanted to see how they interpreted her style, and what we could add to ours.

We didn't like this video because of the use of location. It's not a location Kate Nash would use and isn't her style. They also film some people doing dance in a studio which Kate Nash wouldn't do. If she was going to use dance performance she would have them dancing around her. Also the style of clothes the cast were wearing were not Indie and not what Kate would wear. We did like the narrative of the video as it relates to the lyrics but doesn't follow them all the time and how when she blows up the balloon it has the word "babe" on it like it is growing.

The song they have chosen is really slow, so its slightly boring to watch.  She seems to have filmed it herself as you can sometimes see her hand holding it, and it doesn't look professional. She hasn't thought about her locations because in one part it just seems like a normal plain bedroom whereas Kate wouldn't have anything plain as that isn't her style. The girl in the video is also not putting much effort into singing. This is an example of the type of video we would not want to create.

2 Other Videos by Kate Nash:
Mouthwash-
Artist: Kate Nash
Song: Mouthwash
Genre: Indie-Pop
Location(s): Backstage, dressing room, playing on stage
Kate looking into a mirror while she is backstage in the dressing room, she is performing singing to the camera through the mirror. Surrounded by different items of dressing up clothing.

Walking around backstage towards the stage area. Still singing to the camera as she is walking around. Shows the location by the plain walls and odd pieces of clothes and props around the shot, and the Fire Exit sign, shows they are backstage.

Kate is on stage, performing, playing the piano and singing to the camera/ audience. The camera moves in around Kate in a circle as though it is following the backing dancers. The backing dancers are dressed as robots (quirky, different, random) This shows Kate's personality, she is also quirky which is why she wouldn't have backing dancers dressed in normal clothes.

Costumes: Flowery dress, coloured nails, sparkly dress, glittery make-up, curly hair
Kate wears a flowery vintage style dress, under the dress she wears black leggings. This is in the scenes where she is backstage. This shows that she is normal and casual backstage.

She is wearing her hair in loose curls, that look natural and has blue glittery eye shadow on with eye liner. This is her backstage make-up.

In  the scenes where she is on stage, she is wearing a dress with leggings still but the dress is glittery and shiny, which shows she is performing and feels like a star with all the lights on her.

The shoes she wears on stage are glittery and shiny to match her dress. They are high heeled which shows she is girly and feminine.

The make-up she wears on stage is glittery around her eyes and she is wearing black eye liner. Her hair looks more styled.

Storyline: Kate Nash is backstage helper who makes her way onto the stage as a big star.
Performance: Playing the piano and singing in the middle of the stage.
Kate sings as she walks around backstage towards the stage. As though she is taking to the camera.

On stage, Kate plays the piano and sings, whilst her backing dancers (dressed as robots) skate around her on roller blades, disco style.
Style: Girly, pop style, fun, sarcastic.
Colour: Sparkly, bright, colourful.

Notes: Props like make-up tin, flowers, clothes, backstage ropes. People dressed up as robots as background dancers.
Model heads with golden dress up wigs. Shows she is backstage. Where there is going to be a performance.
Bits of clothing and costumes backstage. Hanging from the walls as Kate walks around them.

Make-up tin on the dressing table whilst she pretends to be playing piano on the table. As though she is practising for her big performance.

Ropes hanging from walls backstage makes the location look realistic.

Pumpkin Soup-
Artist: Kate Nash
Song: Pumpkin Soup
Genre: Indie-Pop
Location(s): garden made of cardboard, green screen
Use of cut out statues to make it look like they are sat in a fantasy garden. They are sat on a large red vintage style telephone. It is a very unrealistic location.

Cartoon style cut outs of trees, in front of a green screen that is a light blue colour to make it look like sky. Oversized flower in her hand that she is picking leaves off absent mindedly.

Use of green screen again with a light blue colour like the sky. Use of cut out statues in a tree shape to make it look like a garden. Kate is knitting a scarf with hearts on it, refers to the songs theme "love".

Garden style cartoon background, blue sky created on a green screen. Cardboard "kissing stall" like they are at a fair. People dressed up as white fluffy cats in the background. Gives it a cute girly atmosphere.

Over sized dolls house, unrealistic effect. Small TV and small clock on the wall.

It is a very childish location. This is the outside of the dolls house, where the man is sat. Cartoon style dolls house.

Everything is very exaggerated. Like a theatre production. Use of green screen background for the swirly tree shapes.

Costumes: Bright yellow tights, red t-shirt and blue shorts (girly)
Kate: Girly, blue and white dress, makes her look like a doll. Alice in wonderland style. Curly hair and bright red shoes. Guy: Shirt and tie and skinny dark blue jeans. Worn with bright white pumps and red round glasses. Makes him look slightly geeky.

Kate wearing a simple red t-shirt and high waisted blue shorts, very casual girly style. Hair curled and a red simple square bracelet.

Guy wearing striped blue and white sailor style t-shirt. Red rounded glasses and red skinny jeans. Indie-pop style, geek style glasses.

Kate wearing navy blue dress, with bright red tights, fun and indie style. She is also wearing red rounded glasses to match the guy. Dark black doll style shoes and curly hair.

Guy wearing a bright yellow t-shirt and a red patterned cardigan, this is an indie-pop style. He is also still wearing the red rounded glasses to show his geeky side.

Storyline: Kate is explaining to a guy that she likes that all she wants is to kiss him, but he wants a relationship
Performance: singing
Style: In the style of an old t.v show with opening credits, but also cartoon style with the bright colours and the pop bubble font.

Cartoon style. Like the opening of a TV show. Very colourful, and bubble style font.

Colour: Bright, red, green, blue, pink, yellow, block colours
Notes: People dressed up in cat suits, as background dancers.
Use of pink teddy bear props, making them dance and kiss, over sweet and over exaggerated.

Props like heart shaped balloons, this adds to the overall atmosphere and effect of the video.

People dressed up in cat costumes, as the background dancers.

First Idea

This is my initial idea for a music video.

Genre: Ska
Band/Artist: Madness
Song: Baggy Trousers

This is the original CD cover-

This is the original music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJOLwy7un3U

This is the CD artwork:

This is a magazine advert for Madness:

I chose Madness as an idea for a new music video because the original song was and still is really famous. Everyone knows Madness and people of all ages listen to the music. "Baggy Trousers" is a really catchy, fun song and would be good song to make a new video for it.

The new music video could include: group of guys
                                                      college (background)
shots of the band and the singer performing
shots of jokes/pranks played on people by the guys
